Create options before you need them

The Solopreneur Copilot P.S. read an web version of this email here: barrontech.kit.com/posts/ Create options before you need them! When I was in Mexico with my family on spring break – everyone napping, kids out cold – I was wide awake. Consumed. Deals I needed to close. Someone else’s urgency had followed me all the way to another country. That was 2023. The burnout was real. And what made it worse was realizing I’d built my entire financial life around a system that wasn’t mine to control. The answer is options. And you have to build them before you need them, because by the time you need them, you’re already behind. I applied for jobs consistently through most of my career, even when things were going fine. Part of it was staying sharp – interviewing is a skill built on confidence and communication and it atrophies fast. Part of it was knowing what the market thought I was worth. But the real reason was simple: if something went sideways, I had somewhere to land. And things always eventually go sideways. The structure most people live inside comes with a single point of failure built in. One income source, one job, one boss on one bad day who decides your financial fate. The ego, the politics are real. One misinterpreted email, one bad quarter, and it’s gone. You were renting a seat and calling it stability. What’s different right now is you can actually build something. FAST. I built CoSell Buddy – a Microsoft co-sell execution tool – with zero prior software development experience. AI coding tools. A few hundred pull requests. I demoed it recently with a prospect. That conversation turned into $11,250 a month in consulting engagements, partly because I showed up with expertise, and partly because I had working software backing it all up. That’s the kind of option worth building. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment, AI has removed most of the barriers. You can stress-test an idea, have a real conversation with it about what problem you’re solving, get a prototype off the ground faster than you’d think. The window is wide open. One more thing on UBI: I think it’s coming. AI is going to displace enough work that some version of universal basic income becomes part of the conversation. But the math doesn’t work the way people hope. If everyone gets $100k a year, prices adjust. The floor went up. Necessities get covered – and building real wealth stays exactly as hard as it was, because everyone’s baseline just moved. UBI is a floor. You build above it. The time to start was probably a year ago. Today still works. Get flippin going. And if you need help click below.
