5 solo biz lessons from my convo w Brian

Read Time: 5m

My goal is to help you to expedite and increase your digital sales by accelerating your Solopreneur Journey.

One of the best ways to do that is to learn from others.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of chatting with Brian Dordevic.

He’s the CEO of @alphaefficiency, which is a web design and SEO firm.

Here’s 5 things I learned / were re-inforced for me:

1/ Success takes time:

Brian had a 9-5 but started his solo biz in 2010. He purchased a domain name and used it for a variety of ventures.

Fast-forward to 2023 and he has a significant web design and SEO firm.

13 years - remember that

2/ Nobody knows what they’re doing at first (and sometimes ever):

Brian’s ventures varied from writing (he wrote over 600 articles about various topics…600!), to creating a digital magazine on the app store, to freelancing.

He eventually gravitated to what motivated him the most.

3/ Find your core motivation:

During Brian’s freelancing phase, he would deliver a website and see his client’s eyes light up with excitement for their new future.

That REALLY motivated him.

When his clients got a dopamine spike based off something he did, that’s when it all clicked for him.

4/ Quit your 9-5 job sooner than later:

Brian had a great 9-5 job, had about 25 direct reports and essentially “had it made”.

However, he knew that his skills were transferrable to the open market, so Brian put in his notice in late 2019.

He said that there’s no better motivation than making sure you can pay rent.

Everyone’s situation is different, so don’t put your 2 week’s notice in before making an informed decision, however, I do agree that pressure is good.

Pressure forces you to take action.

If you have a 9-5, you could get caught up in the trap of being too comfortable and never pursuing your passion.

5/ Buying courses and learning accelerates growth:

Brian’s web design agency started taking off after he purchased and started applying learnings from courses from Dan Koe and others.

He attributes the knowledge of others to the acceleration of his business and without it, he’d be stuck at lower income levels.

TL, DR:

  1. Success takes time: think in years and decades, not days and months.
  2. Nobody knows what they’re doing: grab the mic, test ideas and follow the signals.
  3. Find what truly motivates you: without it, you’ll give up.
  4. Pressure creates action: if you’re too comfortable, you won’t do anything. Get uncomfortable.
  5. Learn from others: have enough self-awareness that you don’t know everything. Buy courses, watch YT vids and apply your new knowledge to upgrade your mind and your business.

I hope this helps you as you build your solo business.

If I can figure out how to share the audio recording of our interview, I’ll be sending that out as well.

Have a great Saturday.

Matt
